Attention and connection
Connection can be easy to feel when we are giving someone our attention.
We listen to what they are saying. Notice their expression. Take an interest in what is happening for them. Yet our attention doesn't always stay there.
I’m curious about what happens to connection when our attention begins to drift away.
When our attention is elsewhere
We can be sitting beside someone while thinking about something that happened earlier or what we need to do next. We might be listening while checking our phone, preparing our response or caught up in our own thoughts. The other person is still there. Yet part of our attention has gone somewhere else.
When we don't notice
Attention can drift without us realising. We might continue the conversation, respond to what someone says and appear to be listening, while missing some of what is happening between us. Sometimes we only realise afterwards that we weren't really there. Perhaps we remember the conversation, but not quite the moment.
What connection asks of us
Connection doesn't require our full attention all the time. We have our own thoughts, responsibilities and things that need our attention too. Yet there are moments when someone is sharing something with us, sitting beside us or simply spending time with us, and our attention is part of what we are giving them. Perhaps it is worth noticing when that attention has drifted.
Returning to each other
We might notice that we have stopped listening. We might look up from our phone, let go of the thought we were following or simply become interested again in what the other person is saying. We don't need to make anything of it.
We can just return.
Our attention will drift again. It always will. Perhaps connection is not about never drifting away. Perhaps sometimes it is about noticing, and coming back to each other.
I wonder what you might notice the next time you are with someone and realise your attention has drifted away.
