Technology in relationships
How often does technology find its way into our relationships?
We might send messages throughout the day, share photos, check in with each other, or sit together while both looking at our phones. Technology can help us stay close, especially when we're apart, but it can also become part of the time we spend together.
I’m curious about what happens to our attention when technology becomes part of how we relate to each other.
When we are together
We can be sitting beside someone we care about while our attention is somewhere else.
A message arrives, we check something, or a conversation on our phone catches our attention. We might only look for a moment, but the person beside us is still there while our attention has gone somewhere else.
Sometimes we come back without missing much. Other times, we miss something small that we don't even realise was happening.
When we are apart
Technology has changed how we stay connected when we aren't together.
We can send a message whenever we think of someone, share a photo from our day or have a conversation across the other side of the world. Someone can feel much closer because they are only a message away.
There is something lovely about that.
Yet being able to contact someone at any time doesn't necessarily mean we are giving each other our attention.
When communication becomes constant
We can keep conversations going throughout the day, with messages coming and going whenever we have a moment. Sometimes this feels like connection. Other times it can become another thing we need to keep up with.
We might start wondering why someone hasn't replied, checking whether they've seen our message, or feeling that we should respond straight away.
Technology can make it easy to stay in touch, but sometimes staying in touch can start to take quite a lot of our attention.
What happens when we're not looking at a screen?
Some of the things that happen between people don't need technology.
A conversation that takes longer than expected. Sitting together without saying much. Noticing someone's expression. Laughing about something that happened during the day. These moments can be easy to overlook when there is always something else we could check.
Perhaps being connected isn't only about being able to reach each other.
Sometimes it is about being there.
Where is our attention?
Technology is now part of many of our relationships. It helps us communicate, share our lives and stay close to people who aren't nearby.
Perhaps the question isn't whether technology belongs in our relationships. It already does.
Maybe it's simply worth noticing where our attention goes when we are with the people we care about, and whether we are still noticing the person who is right there with us.
I wonder what you might notice the next time you're with someone you care about and your phone is within reach.
